Heart surgery services at a major hospital were dysfunctional, grossly understaffed and pervaded by bullying, which put the care of patients at risk, according to a scathing review obtained by the Herald. The Waikato District Health Board commissioned an external review of cardiac surgery services in 2018. A team of Australian experts conducted the inquiry and found a broken system with a raft of problems that contributed to concerning outcomes for patients , their report said.
